Working from Home

During the last years many professionals started working from their homes especially in the tech industry and abandoning the office life. At the same time many companies are adopting policies and strategies to facilitate that transition. For example Dell is aiming 50% of their employees to work from home by 2020 according to an article published in CNN Money. Of course working from home means something different to everyone but it’s definitely a very popular subject if not a dream for many people. The laptop lifestyle as it’s also called, it’s not just for the computer geeks or some experts in the software industry. Today it’s available pretty much to anyone who’s willing to get out of their comfort zone and make it happen. Starting a home business is certainly something you shouldn’t take lightly and it’s not as easy as it may sounds. You must first sort out the details and your expectations when it comes to the income you hope to achieve online and the time you are willing to dedicate in your online adventures.

In this post, i am going to mention some of the advantages of working from home. There are also a few disadvantages but we will talk about them in another post.

Working from Home

The Good Side

1.You can work from wherever you want

You can take your business everywhere you go and work from anywhere in the world. You are not confined to your house since all you really need is a WiFi connection. Your office can look any way you want to look and can be anywhere you want. You can travel and take care of your work at the same time. The best part though is the convenience you experience working from home especially if you are a parent with childcare responsibilities.

2.No colleagues and office politics

Ours colleagues can be like our family members, you didn’t choose them but you are stuck with them. I don’t mean that you have to dislike your co-workers but chances are you have already met the guy who says stupid jokes in the office all the time and you smile back at him because you don’t want to look weird or the lady who brings her smelly lunch at the office and the whole room smells like a cheap restaurant (the bad ones i mean). Working from home might actually improve the relationships with people since you will probably skip the gossiping that usually happens in workplaces which sometimes can cause extra stress and pressure. Also, you might be able to communicate more effectively with your business partners or co-workers since you will have to write to them or have a video chat and not just show up and tell them what you think.

Working in an office also means you have to follow a certain dress code which can be pretty costly and sometimes not so comfortable. Working from home on the other provides you with the opportunity to wear what you are comfortable with.

3. Work when you want and create your own schedule

The word we are looking for here is flexibility. Flexible working hours means you can organize your working life in a way that suits you better and covers your needs effectively. If you are not a morning person and you like working at night or late in the evening that’s not a problem anymore. You can choose when and how much time you will spend on a project every day as long as you can deliver on time. You can take as many breaks as you want, listen to your favorite music and work at your own pace. You can also organize your personal matters like doctors appointments, going to the gym or your grocery shopping in a more productive and convenient way. You are your own boss and finally, you can organize your working life the way you want.

4. Better work/life balance

Working from home can improve your quality of life for a number of reasons. First of all no more or at least a lot less commuting time. Just that can increase your productivity and also your well-being. No more traffic jams and endless hours in traffic and you will save a lot of money in gas or in train/bus fair. Working from home can also mean fewer distractions and better focus in your daily tasks since you will not have anyone around physically bothering you. You are in control of your own environment, you work at your own pace and you can concentrate on your work a lot easier.

5. Better Physical & Mental Health

Working from home can reduce your stress levels a lot which will definitely benefit your health in general. You don’t have to worry about unfriendly colleagues and a poor working environment anymore. It can be a lot easier to find time for your personal hobbies or just take a walk to clear your head. Studies have found that people who work from home get less sick compared to on-site workers. Let’s not forget you can improve your diet too since you are always a few steps away from your own fridge and you can easily prepare a healthy snack. But above all that you can be closer to your relatives and spent more time with your family something very important if you have small children in your house. A more balanced personal life where you can plan how to spend your time with the people you love instead of being tired every time you come back home from work means a more productive and happy life.

6. Do what you Love

You can choose your job instead of waiting for someone to choose you. If you are working as a freelancer you can choose the projects you want and also the clients you want to work for. You will not have to work on projects you don’t enjoy or spending your time meeting with clients you don’t want to work for. Also working from home can be a great option for people with disabilities who may feel ostracized from the working environment.
